LEGACY COMMITTEEThis year, the El Paso AIA Chapter formed the Legacy Committee. Our goal is to build a living archive to record and celebrate the work of past and current architects and architecture firms in El Paso. This living archive will be made available to the public and is intended to serve as a learning tool to promote a better understanding of the architecture profession and showcase the rich history of El Paso’s built environment. The Legacy Committee will organize events and activities that will encourage our local community to champion El Paso's architectural heritage. By doing so, the Legacy committee hopes to inspire future generations of architects and ensure that the City's unique architectural legacy is appreciated and protected for years to come. To accomplish our goals, the Legacy Committee is collecting information to organize and archive in two distinct categories. The first category pertains specifically to AIA El Paso Chapter history. We respectfully request that Chapter members submit documents such as copies of Chapter newsletter mailers, photos of chapter events, past Design Award winner recipients, past Mayor’s proclamations, Archtober flyers, etc. Additionally, Legacy Committee Co-Chair, Christian Mijares, Assoc. AIA, is creating a Chapter president timeline. If you have served as Chapter president, please submit a photo headshot to be included in the timeline. The second category pertains to Architect & Firm legacy. This component of the archive will contain past and present firm profiles, a “family tree” showing El Paso’s architecture firm lineage dating back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and media of notable projects in El Paso designed by local architects. We respectfully request that firms share photographs, drawings, sketches, renderings and any other media with the Legacy committee to be archived. Additionally, if there are stories about a firm or Architect that you would like to share, please reach out to the committee to document. Per early research and information gathering for the archive, the Legacy Committee would like to share with you, in this month’s newsletter, select photographs taken by the architectural photographer, Julius Schulman, of the El Paso Civic Center (designed by Carroll, Daeuble, DuSang & Rand with Garland & Hilles) and St. Patrick’s School (designed by Carroll & Daeuble). Images were kindly provided by Mijares-Mora Architects, Inc., the successor to Carroll, Daeuble, DuSang & Rand. Together we can work to record and preserve Our Legacy.
