Please join us in congratulating Ivan Lopez on completing his Architect Registration Exams and fulfilling the requirements to become a registered Texas Architect. Ivan is a Project Architect at Dekker, formerly Dekker Perich Sabatini, based in El Paso. With over 10 years of experience, Ivan has successfully led commercial, recreational, educational, civic, and medical office projects.He is notorious for his reliable and effective engagement with clients, consultants, contractors, and city planning departments. He continuously strives for quality in design, construction documents, and office development. Early in his career, he contributed to highly regarded educational projects,such as the El Paso Community College Architecture Discipline Building and the YISD Bel Air High School Athletic Complex. Both projects received recognition from the AIA El Paso Design Awards in 2017 and 2020, respectively. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture in Houston, Texas with International Studies in Barcelona, Spain. As a true advocate for the betterment of his community, Ivan has served as Commissioner and later as Chairman of the City of El Paso’s Historic Landmark Commission. In addition, alongside the local AIA Conventions Committee, he played a key role in organizing the Texas Society of Architect’s 83rd Annual Conference and Design Expo held in El Paso, the first statewide conference of its type in the last 40 years - a unique opportunity to showcase our border region. Q. What were some of the key challenges you faced along the way to becoming a Licensed Architect? One of the main challenges was finding consistent time out of work to study the exam material on a daily basis. An additional challenge was identifying which books and study guides were most essential in preparation for each of the exam divisions.
Q. Can you briefly describe your journey? I decided to focus the early stages of my architectural career on obtaining a high level of experience across all facets of a project before I even attempted to fulfill one of the exams. Although this approach did not provide a major advantage, in some instances, it did provide me with an intuitive ability to discern sections of the study material of most importance relative to other sections. In addition, I found studying alone and consistently reviewing the content helped me retain a lot of information.
Q. How does it feel to finally be a Licensed Architect? It is extremely rewarding to know that this is a culmination of the long study hours spent. This achievement represents a major stepping stone to a successful career in the field of architecture.
Q. Now that you are licensed what are your immediate professional goals? My goals lie in utilizing the transformative potential of design to create a positive impact in communities through architecture, landscape design, digital graphics and other media.
Q. Are there any specific projects or areas of architecture you’re excited to explore? I enjoy working on all building types, as well as urban planning projects.In the future, I’m particularly excited to explore the design of Multi-family housing and its potential to integrate with other uses to create vibrant, mixed-use neighborhoods- places where people live, work, and play.
