2021 DESIGN AWARD WINNERS

AIA El Paso Chapter's Annual Design Awards recognizes outstanding architectural and urban design by architects, emerging professionals, and students practicing in El Paso, to promote public interest in architectural design excellence. The 2021 Design Award winners were announced and recognized at the Annual AIA El Paso Architecture Gala (Powered by PechaKucha) on October 22nd in Downtown El Paso at the Hotel Paso del Norte - Pershing Ballroom and was attended by over 250 of the Chapter’s members, colleagues, friends and industry professionals. Award recipients presented their projects live in the PechaKucha 20x20 format at the Gala event.

Each year at the Chapter conducts a competitive process to solicit, review and award a series of scholarships to support local Emerging Professionals and Students enrolled in the local architecture programs in El Paso. By supporting the up and coming talent within our community the AIA El Paso Chapter hopes to help retain and grow the pool of architectural professionals in our market. JURY CHAIR AND GUEST SPEAKER

Carlos Jimenez

Carlos Jimenez Studio

Our Jury Chair for the 2021 Design Awards was Carlos Jimenez. Born in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1959, Jimenez moved to the United States in 1974. Following his training as an architect at the University of Houston College of Architecture in 1981 Jimenez established Carlos Jimenez Studio in 1983. He has previously taught at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), Texas A&M University, University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) and at Berkeley, University of Navarra in Pamplona Spain, Williams College, Tulane University, University of Houston, Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, University of Texas at Arlington and at Austin, University of Oregon and Washington University in Saint Louis. Jimenez is a tenured Professor at Rice University School of Architecture and is a frequent guest lecturer, critic and jury member at national and international architecture events.  He served on the Jury of the Pritzker Architecture Prize from 2001 to 2011. 

Built works by Carlos Jimenez include among others: the Central Administration and Junior School for the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Spencer Studio Art Building at Williams College,  Irwin Mortgage Corporate Headquarters, the Cummins Child Development Center, Peeler Art Center at DePauw University, Crowley House in Marfa, Rice University Library Service Center and Data Center, Tyler School of Art at Temple University, the Centre Urbain in Evry France, Hotel Saint George in Marfa Texas, and Won Buddhism of Houston.

Jimenez has received numerous awards for excellence in design and teaching from Architectural Record, the American Institute of Architects, Rice University, Design Intelligence, the Chicago Athenaeum, Architecture, Progressive Architecture and the Architectural League of New York among others.
